Monumental LOVE Sculpture Installed on Long-term Loan to the City of Grand Rapids

The Frey Foundation, established in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 1974 to strengthen the communities of Western Michigan, protect its natural environment, and enhance its arts, has acquired a monumental sculpture by Robert Indiana, LOVE (Blue Outside Red Inside), 1966-1999, which the Foundation is installing in the city center opposite the Grand Rapids Art Museum.

Grand Rapids is widely known for its annual ArtPrize exhibition, the largest program in the United States of outdoor art installations, and for the SiTE:LAB organization’s ongoing series of contemporary art installations, which welcome tens of thousands of visitors each year. Adding a major new element to the city’s vibrant landscape of public art, the Frey Foundation has generously lent its LOVE sculpture to the City of Grand Rapids for long-term installation. City officials and Frey Foundation leadership unveiled the 8-foot-tall LOVE to the public on the morning of May 9, 2018, on the occasion of the city’s “The Art of Placemaking” luncheon.
