In August 1966 Robert Indiana accepted a commission to design the sets and costumes for a 1967 production of Gertrude Stein and Virgil Thomson’s 1947 opera The Mother of Us All, inspired by Susan B. Anthony, at the Tyrone Guthrie Theater, Minneapolis. He revised the original scenario by introducing a Model T Ford to the production, as seen in this illustration for Act II, Scene II.
