Ài is one of eight 24 by 22-inch works in Indiana's Ài series, in which the Mandarin character for Love, “Ài,” is rendered in different color combinations. This black/white version was exhibited in Indiana’s first solo show in Italy, Robert Indiana a Milano, at the Padiglione d’Arte Contemporanea, Milan, July 4–September 14, 2008. More recently, it was included in the exhibition Robert Indiana, at Ben Brown Fine Arts, Hong Kong, December 7, 2021–March 8, 2022.
