In 2002 the first Chinese exhibition of Indiana’s work was held at the Shanghai Art Museum. At the conclusion of the show the museum’s executive director sent Indiana the Mandarin word for love, “Ài,” written in several different typefaces. That fall Indiana began a series of large and small Ài paintings in a variety of color combinations.
