In 2002 the first Chinese exhibition of Indiana’s work was held at the Shanghai Art Museum. At the conclusion of the show the museum’s executive director sent Indiana the Mandarin word for love, “Ài,” written in several different typefaces. This red/white canvas is one of fourteen Ài paintings in a variety of color combinations that Indiana created from 2002 to 2003.
