My Father belongs to a series of columns that Indiana began in 1964, and modified in 1998 with the addition of gold paint. The other works are My Mother, Dillinger, Bob’s Column, Call Me Ishmael, and Call Me Indiana. These columns were first exhibited with wheels in 2005 at the exhibition Robert Indiana: Wood, Paul Kasmin Gallery, New York. They wre most recently on view at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Wakefield, United Kingdom, in the exhibition Robert Indiana: Sculpture 1958–2018.
Although not completed until later, My Father’s mid-60s conception date places it in the same period that he was working on his Mother and Father diptych. Thus, My Father, along with the column My Mother, as works that commemorate his parents, can be seen as companions to the painting.
My Father is currently on display in Robert Indiana: The Sweet Mystery, at the Procuratie Vecchie, Venice.
