Peace Eludes the World is one of 24 Peace Paintings created by the artist in 2003. A response to 9/11, they are a continuation of the political themes found in Indiana’s work since his days on Coenties Slip. The work was first exhibited in Robert Indiana: Peace Paintings at the Paul Kasmin Gallery, New York, April 21–May 29, 2004, and was also shown at the Galería Javier López, Madrid, in the exhibition Robert Indiana: Obra reciente, November 5–December 31, 2004.
