In 1942, in order to attend Arsenal Technical High School, which was known for its strong art department, Indiana agreed to live with his father and stepmother in Indianapolis. Tech depicts students changing a car tire, with the school building visble in the background. Indiana’s high school drawings often featured cars, and the artist later noted that cars were a “dominating and consistent” part of his childhood.
