Description

When the Museum of Modern Art in New York commissioned the artist to do the graphic announcements for the "4 Americans in Paris" exhibition in 1970–71 it also sponsored this special print of the "4" image on which the poster, the banner and an unused design for the catalogue cover were all based—this being the SMALL FOUR of his "Numbers" series which had already provided the source for the earlier DIE DEUTSCHE VIER serigraph commissioned by Documenta in 1968. This FOUR bridges the Franco-American aspects of the situaiton.
