The Big 8 is one of four paintings from 1962 that take the number eight as their central theme. It is also Indiana's first large-scale painting to feature a single numeral as its central motif, anticipating his Numbers series by two years and The Cardinal Numbers by four. The number eight was associated in Indiana’s mind with his mother, Carmen, who was born in August, the eighth month.
