Two Golden Orbs is one of a group of orb paintings on wood that Indiana began in 1959. Unable to afford more than the occasional small canvas at this time, Indiana removed the plywood and Homasote panels from his loft at 25 Coenties Slip and repurposed them for his paintings. In 2001 he revisited the works, which had never been exhibited, and repainted them in gold paint, without modifying the original composition.
In 2009 the works were exhibited for the first time, in Robert Indiana and the Star of Hope, at the Farnsworth Art Museum, Rockland, Maine.
