Coins Designed by Sculptors

The exhibition Coins Designed by Sculptors, at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, was a joint project with the magazine Art in America, which commissioned six sculptors to redesign the currency of the United States for its fiftieth anniversary issue (April 1963). Indiana was assigned the penny, which he designed polychromatically and decagonally for plastic. He also created two paintings of the design, both titled The New Glory Penny, one of which was included in the exhibition. The exhibition traveled to The Philadelphia National Bank, Philadelphia, September 20–27, 1963; the Brandeis University Library, Waltham, Massachusetts, October 21–November 10, 1963; and the Great Eastern Numismatic Society, Philadelphia, December 1963.
