Perceptions of the Spirit in Twentieth-Century American Art was a groundbreaking museum exhibition that examined the profound role of religion, mysticism, and inner spiritual life in modern American visual culture. Indiana's painting The Sweet Mystery and his monumental drawing Stavrosis, which was exhibited publicly for the first time, were included.

The exhibition traveled to the University Art Museum, University of California, Berkeley, December 20, 1977–February 12, 1978; the Marion Koogler McNay Art Institute, San Antonio, March 5–April 16, 1978; and the Columbus Gallery of Fine Art, Columbus, Ohio, May 10–June 19, 1978.
