Robert Indiana, curated by Robert L. B. Tobin and held at the Michener Galleries, University of Texas, Austin, was the artist's first retrospective since 1968. His series of 72-inch-square Decade: Autoportrait paintings, begun in 1972, were exhibited for the first time alongside forty-one additional paintings and sculptures. The show traveled to the Chrysler Museum, Norfolk, Virginia, December 1, 1977–January 15, 1978; the Indianapolis Museum of Art, Indianapolis, February 21–April 2, 1978; the Neuberger Museum, State University of New York, Purchase, New York, April 23–May 21, 1978; and the Art Center, South Bend, Indiana, June 2–July 16, 1978.
