Robert Indiana's sculpture Moon (1960) was included in the Museum of Modern Art’s landmark exhibition The Art of Assemblage, curated by William Seitz, and according to Alfred H. Barr, Jr., “one of the Museum’s most controversial exhibitions of the last twenty years.” The exhibition traveled to the Dallas Museum for Contemporary Arts, Dallas, January 9–February 11, 1962, and the San Francisco Museum of Art, San Francisco, March 5–April 15, 1962.
Indiana’s sculpture was acquired by the Museum of Modern Art with money from the Philip Johnson Fund.
