The New Art was a survey of recent developments in Pop art held at at the Davison Art Center, Wesleyan University, curated by Lawrence Alloway. It featured the work of Richard Artschwager, Roslyn Drexler, Yayoi Kusama, Roy Lichtenstein, James Rosenquist, and Andy Warhol, amongst others. Indiana was represented by the the sculpture Hole (1960–62), the painting Eat (1962), and the drawing, The American Hug #1 (1964). He also designed the cover of the exhibition catalogue, in which he included a statement on The New Art.
