Unpainted to the Last: Moby-Dick and Twentieth-Century American Art, 1930–1990

Three of Indiana's paintings, Melville (1961), The Melville Triptych (1962), and Coenties Slip (1962), and two of his sculptures, Ahab (1960–62) and Ahab (1962, cast 1991), were among over 80 works of art inspired by Herman Melville's classic 1851 novel included in an exhibition organized by the Spencer Museum with guest curator Elizabeth Schultz, University of Kansas. The show, which investigated the myriad ways modern American artists have responded to the great 19th century novel, traveled to the University of Michigan Museum of Art, Ann Arbor, November 4–December 24, 1995, and the Mary and Leigh Block Gallery, Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, January 12–March 3, 1996.
