Word and Image, curated by Lawrence Alloway, at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, was an exhibition of works since 1947 in which words and language play a significant role. Five of Indiana’s paintings were shown: Coenties Slip West (1961), Le Premier Homme (1961), God Is a Lily of the Valley (1961–62), the Die panel of the diptych Eat/Die (1962), and The Small Diamond Demuth Five (1963).
