Robert Indiana kept a series of illustrated journals during the late 1950s and 1960s, in which he discusses the development of his work as well as his daily life on Coenties Slip.
Indiana's journal page from April 20, 1961, includes a color sketch of the sculpture Womb. A note to the right of the sculpture highlights the work's haunched tenon. Below the sketch are the work's title, country of origin, date, and dimensions: WOMB • USA • 1960 • 44 ½“ x 13". Below this Indiana records that his work was not returned that day (from the Indiana / Forakis show at the David Anderson Gallery).
