Robert Indiana kept a series of illustrated journals during the late 1950s and 1960s, in which he discusses the development of his work as well as his daily life on Coenties Slip.

In this journal entry for April 20, 1962, Indiana declares it "truly a good Friday on [the] Slip." He writes that James Rosenquist was responsible for the biggest burst of activity that day when he brought various friends over to the loft. He also mentions a visit by gallerist Rosa Esman with a friend and her children, and that Esman selected a small painting for the Framm's in Buffalo: Red Star (untraced), a 12 x 11-inch work that was in the Mamaroneck (Indiana / Natkin, March 24–April 14, 1962) show.

Indiana also records that he and J. (his partner, fashion designer John Kloss) decided on a trip to Washington for Easter, and that curator Campell Wylly called to say that he might bring James Wilder Green (an architect and arts administrator) down on Sunday, but that the Washington plans could cancel that. "Not another studio visit so soon again, please!" he writes.

At the bottom of the entry is a sketch of Five-Stop (work no longer extant), a 46 1/2 x 6 1/2-inch wood, metal, and gesso construction. To the left of the sketch Indiana notes adding a gesso numeral "5" to the tin lid.
