Robert Indiana kept a series of illustrated journals during the late 1950s and 1960s, in which he discusses the development of his work as well as his daily life on Coenties Slip.

In his journal entry for April 9, 1961, Indiana records a studio visit by Andy Warhol, whom he had met at the opening of Indiana / Forakis on April 1, and who came with John Ardoin and Norman Fisher. He notes that Warhol had never heard of I Ching so he gave him a reading "#1 with moving lines—fantastic." He also writes that artist Richard Smith came down and that they watched Godot again and David Susskind's show Open End, and that Warhol, Ardoin, and Fisher stayed for dinner.
