Robert Indiana kept a series of illustrated journals during the late 1950s and 1960s, in which he discusses the development of his work as well as his daily life on Coenties Slip.

In his journal entry for February 19, 1962, Indiana records that artist Po Kim returned to stretch more canvases for him, working eight hours and exhausting his supply of canvas but not the last batch of stretchers. He writes that "this put him on [the] same schedule" and he spent time working on several of his Polygon paintings, "bringing them into general sharpness and greater focus."

He also records a late call from James Rosenquist regarding "his rather meteoric progress." Indiana writes that he already knew Arthur Carr had acquired a work, and that Rosenquist informed him that collector Jan Streep had purchased his "blue mirror painting," and that a collector named Hayes was interested in two works.
