Robert Indiana kept a series of illustrated journals during the late 1950s and 1960s, in which he discusses the development of his work as well as his daily life on Coenties Slip.

In his journal page for May 12, 1962, Indiana discusses a call from the David Anderson Gallery about a letter Anderson was sending to Gallery One in London, which incorrectly stated that he was showing at Betty Parsons (Indiana notes "they are interested in my work"), and that Philip Johnson's check had come through (the architect purchased two of Indiana's works in 1962). He also describes a visit to Brooklyn to see the Worth Collection as well as a walk to the Japanese Garden and the Prospect Park Zoo.

At the bottom of the page is a sketch of the sculpture Moon, to the right of which Indiana records "affix wheels [to] shaft and mount shaft on base (a segment of 27 C/S [Coenties Slip] Youngerman's studio beams)." He also notes the work's medium (wood/iron/gesso) and its dimensions (44 x 13 inches [21 3/4 B]).
