Robert Indiana kept a series of illustrated journals during the late 1950s and 1960s, in which he discusses the development of his work as well as his daily life on Coenties Slip.

In his journal entry for October 1, 1962, Indiana records encountering Ellsworth Kelly walking his dog Orange, and that they stopped to have one of their longest chats in years, much centered on the recent suicide of Randy Muhleman, who had once lived with Indiana in his Coenties Slip loft. Indiana then went uptown to give Alan Groh, director of the Stable Gallery, a brief biography and his list of paintings for the catalogue (for his first solo show). He writes: "[The] gallery is all finished now, beautiful, and hung with a selection of [the] members: Mitchel Smith, Marisol. [The] space crystallized for my work now. I can foresee no great problems."

Indiana records going to see the Peter Forakis show ("so-so") and picking up magazines, including Art Voices, which had a big ad for his show at Stable Gallery. He then picked up photographs at Norman Fisher's place, hung the painting Nonending Nonagon, and dropped off the photo of Moon at the Museum of Art for Dorothy Miller, who did not invite him to come up. He also notes that J. (his partner, fashion designer John Kloss) was able to find a copy of ARTnews (which included an advertisement for his show).
