Robert Indiana kept a series of illustrated journals during the late 1950s and 1960s, in which he discusses the development of his work as well as his daily life on Coenties Slip.
This journal page covers October 15–19, 1960, although Indiana left the first two entries blank. A sketch of Duncan's Column extends through the entries for October 17 and 18. To the right of the sketch is part of the text that wraps around the column: "Ship Slip / 27 Beacon / Gull Pier / Barge Tug / 3 Bridges / Jeanette [sic] / Love Pier / 15 Gingkos / Doghouse / J. / Orange / Tars Pier."
In his entry for October 17, Indiana mentions reading a review (of the Martha Jackson New Media—New Forms II show) by Fairfield Porter in The Nation, and on October 18 he mentions the opening of the Cy Twombly show at Castelli Gallery.
