Robert Indiana kept a series of illustrated journals during the late 1950s and 1960s, in which he discusses the development of his work as well as his daily life on Coenties Slip.
In his journal entry for October 5, 1962, Indiana records that it was a rainy day, and that Chryssa did not call or come by as she had said she wanted to. He writes that he worked The Calumet, applying the final outer ring of yellow, and that he "put 'The Year of Meteors' on [the] block today, cut masks for [the] last [circle] and repainted [the] outside edge and field, which had not been properly repainted after its strange accident. It appears now [that] all my efforts were not in vain, it taking quite a handsome surface."
He also notes that he inscribed The Dietary and The Rebecca.
Indiana then records that he received a call from Lenore Tawney, who said that Agnes Martin (who was at the New York Psychiatric Institute) asked that she and Indiana come visit her Saturday and Sunday, and that the envelopes and labels for the announcements of his upcoming solo show at the Stable Gallery were ready.
