Robert Indiana kept a series of illustrated journals during the late 1950s and 1960s, in which he discusses the development of his work as well as his daily life on Coenties Slip.

In his journal entry for September 14, 1962, Indiana records that the day started with a visit from gallerist Rolf Nelson (who had moved to Los Angeles), and that he got a call from Alan Groh (Eleanor Ward's assistant at the Stable Gallery) informing him that an art editor from Vogue had stopped by the gallery and picked up four pieces for consideration in the magazine's Christmas art section. A color illustration of Indiana's Grass would be included in the December 1962 issue. Groh also asked him he minded sharing a half page ad in Art International with Andy Warhol, which Indiana notes he did not, but that he did not know Warhols's attitude. Indiana also received a call from gallerist Ileana Sonnabend, which he did not answer, as he was "exhausted with her," as well as with collector Mrs. Burton Tremaine.

Indiana then records going to visit Stephen Durkee with Nelson, who "was itching to do something in his borrowed red MG." He notes that the Durkees "really are in their best mood today; all was peace and tranquility." Once back in the city they had dinner with Indiana's partner John Kloss at George's, and then watched the Will Rogers memoriam on television.
