Robert Indiana kept a series of illustrated journals during the late 1950s and 1960s, in which he discusses the development of his work as well as his daily life on Coenties Slip.

This journal page covers September 2–3, 1960. The entry for September 2, 1960, includes a small sketch of the herm Hole at the top of the page, with a note indicating that wheels were added to the work. Indiana also notes that Scotti (spelled Scotty in earlier journal entries), a friend of Rolf Nelson (who at the time went by Ralph) had indicated that she would like to take his painting Red County back to London with her, but then changed her mind, putting it off until her next visit.

Indiana records having dinner on Whitehall at the "chromy" new place, and that he "worked well into the am, puttering around on wood: cut and washed another base, setting it out [to] dry on [the] rear dormer." He also frequently references current events in his journals, here he notes that Nikita Khrushchev was in Finland for the premier's birthday.

Indiana left the second entry on the page, for September 3, 1960, blank.
