Robert Indiana kept a series of illustrated journals during the late 1950s and 1960s, in which he discusses the development of his work as well as his daily life on Coenties Slip.

This journal page covers September 21–25, 1960. Indiana's entry for September 21 includes a sketch of the reverse of the herm Cuba, with a note to add a white star. A note to the right of the work, added at a later date, mentions that the work was exhibited privately by Martha Jackson (owner of the Martha Jackson Gallery) in 1960, and that it was in his studio in 1962. 

Indiana's entry for September 22 includes a sketch of the reverse of two herms, with notes to add two white circles and a green number to Ge, and stripes to Zeus (later retitled Zig). A note to the right of Zeus, added at a later date, indicates that the work was on temporary loan to the artist Lenore Tawney in 1962.

Indiana's entries for September 23–25 record that he was on Fire Island.
