Peace: A Pearl in Peril is one of 24 Peace Paintings created by the artist in 2003. A response to 9/11, they are a continuation of the political themes found in Indiana’s work since his days on Coenties Slip. The work was first exhibited in Robert Indiana: Peace Paintings at the Paul Kasmin Gallery, New York, April 21–May 29, 2004, and was also shown at Waddington Galleries, London, in Robert Indiana: Paintings and Sculpture, 1961 to 2003, September 29–October 23, 2004.
