Untitled belongs to a series of paintings from 1962 which were inspired by mechanical meters and dials, including the rotary telephone dial, elevator floor dials, and gas meters. As in the two other works, both titled Up, the numbers proceed from zero (at the top) clockwise through nine. This sequence of numbers first appeared in Indiana's painting The American Gas Works, created in December 1961.
