Up is one in a series of small paintings from 1962 that were inspired by mechanical meters and dials, including the rotary telephone dial and elevator floor dials. As in Untitled and a second Up painting, featuring a yellow circle, the numbers proceed clockwise from zero (at the top), through nine. This sequence of numbers first appeared in Indiana's painting The American Gas Works, created in December 1961.
